Hiring full-time makes sense when the work is core to your product or operations, needed every week, and valuable enough that learning accumulates inside your team. Outsource when the need is specialist, bursty, or outside your current strengths.
Ask three questions before you open a role. Is this needed for the next 12 months, or only for a project window? Do we need deep company context, or clear deliverables with a briefing? Can we manage and review the work quality ourselves?
Outsourcing fails most often from vague briefs and weak ownership. Assign someone inside your company as the liaison. Define success metrics, timelines, and review points up front. Hiring fails when you fill a temporary gap with a permanent cost you cannot sustain.
Many teams use a mix: a lean core team for product and customer relationships, plus external partners for campaigns, research, or overflow work. Revisit the mix every quarter as your workload changes.
